It is purposely made with a fairly thin German felt covering so as not to be too mushy sounding and lose all definition and response.  Works beautifully for solo notes in opera such as Puccini for example.  Excellent for all Prokofiev bass drum parts and especially nice for soft solo notes in Verdi Requiem.  Many players even use this mallet for very loud single notes as well when they want extreme weight, power and warmth of sound.
