Founded by Roland Meinl in 1951 and initially producing wind instruments, the first MEINL cymbals appeared in 1952 and were cut from large metal sheets, hammered, lathed and drilled by hand by Roland Meinl himself, who then personally transported them, on the luggage carrier of his bicycle, to the railway station for shipment. MEINL has since gone from such humble origins to become a world leader in percussion instruments.

The Byzance Jazz Series cymbals are hand hammered into shape by MEINL artisans in Turkey using B20 bronze alloy and have an instant colourful sound full of character, with a bright attack followed by dark and washy undertones. While ideal for jazz, these cymbals are great for any style of music that requires the dark, washy sounds of a hammered Turkish cymbal. They have a wide sound spectrum that can cut through in any situation.
